Mimicking foldable living organisms, the geometric ‘Babel’ table light is stamped from one sheet of polypropylene sheeting and is cut and folded in a single process.
The light design combines thin materials and a self-folding 3-dimensional conical structure, collapsing to a variety of heights when needed.
Constructed using the same folding method as a cardboard box reduces production time and material waste, using 100% Australian raw materials. The product works by providing a gentle, non-glare light source, which can be easily stored by the collapsing of the shade down to a minimal height.
The design emerged from Steven Pooley’s experimentations with natural helical forms, such as those of insect wings and the manipulation of a single flat sheet into a 3-dimensional shape.
